This one is a little different from our usual layered shadow boxes. Instead of stacking layers behind a single opening, the house frame is the art — a miniature paper house where every window holds a family portrait, the shutters actually open and close, and a cat (or a dog, or anything your family loves) watches from the top floor
What makes this design special?
The frame is built from sturdy 80 lb cardstock using the same tab-and-flap construction as our popular modular frames — no extra hardware, no bought frame, just paper and glue. The finished size is 9 × 12 inches (23 × 30 cm) with about 2 cm of depth, so it hangs nicely on a wall or leans on a shelf.
A few details:
Five windows — four large ones for family portraits and a smaller arched window at the top for a pet, a baby photo, or any small keepsake image.
Functional shutters — scored hinge lines let each shutter swing open and closed. No glue on the hinges, no faking it.
Hanging flower boxes — tiny layered blooms on foam spacers that hook right onto the window openings. They look intricate but are surprisingly quick to assemble.
Custom family name — the top layer includes an empty text area. Type your name in your cutting software, pick a stencil font, and attach. A sample name layer is included for reference.
Photo stencils with registration marks — no guessing where to glue. Cut the stencil from scrap cardstock, position it over your photo, trim, flip, and align to the marks on the back of the frame. Done.
What’s in the download
The ZIP contains organized folders for the frame, layers, and all the detail elements (windows, roof, chimney, flower boxes, optional backing). Each folder includes SVG, DXF, EPS, and PDF files — compatible with Cricut, Silhouette, Brother, laser cutters, and cutting by hand. The frame parts come in both dashed (fold by hand) and scoring-tool versions.
A detailed illustrated PDF tutorial walks you through every step: frame assembly, window attachment, layer stacking, photo preparation, roof and chimney, and flower box assembly. There is also a separate “Tips for successful intricate cuts” PDF for the detailed parts.
